The Bombay High Court on Wednesday reserved its verdict on the plea of comedian Kunal Kamra, demanding the cancellation of the FIR lodged against Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to make objectionable remarks. Meanwhile, the court has stayed Kamra’s arrest and said that they should not be arrested until further orders. Kunal Kamra is relieved from this news.
Ban on arrest of Kunal Kamra
The matter came to light when Kamra indirectly made a comment calling Shinde a ‘traitor’ during a comedy show in Mumbai. The 36-year-old stand-up comedian had moved the High Court to cancel the FIR filed against him for his remarks. After the complaint of Shiv Sena MLA, a case was registered on this FIR. Kamra had said in her petition that complaints filed against her were a violation of her fundamental rights. He also said that it is a violation of his freedom of expression, the right to engage in business activities and the right to life and freedom inherent in the Constitution.
Commenting on Deputy Chief Minister Shinde said that
Kunal Kamra, a resident of Tamil Nadu, obtained anticipatory bail from the Madras High Court last month. However, the Mumbai Police did not allow him to appear for questioning despite sending him three times. During the comedy show, Kamra used the word ‘traitors’ against him without naming Shinde and changed the tune of a famous Bollywood song of the 1997 film ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’. He was criticized for his statement and later many persons and politicians supported Shinde.
Kamra clarified on this matter
On the other hand, Kamra said that it was a joke and the purpose of his comment was not to insult or insult anyone. He presented it as a joke and said it was part of his show. The matter became more complicated after a complaint was filed against Kamra in other police stations. However, given the seriousness of the entire case, the court has stayed the arrest and promised to pass the order soon in the case.
