Kunal Kamra controversy: Police investigation intensified in case of comment on Deputy Chief Minister in standup show, notice sent to the audience

Standup comedian Kunal Kamra is once again in controversy. During his show in Mumbai, the Mumbai Police sent a notice to him in the case of his remarks on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Now the police have also issued notice to some spectators present in the show and have started the process of recording their statements.

Viewers begin interrogation

The remarks allegedly made on the Deputy Chief Minister are being investigated at the show on 2 February 2025 at Habitat Studios in Mumbai.

  • The police have issued notice to the audience under Section 179 of the CRPC, which allows witnesses to be called for investigation.

  • According to the information, the police has started the process of recording the statements of some spectators.

However, former IPS officer and current advocate YP Singh said that electronic evidence is already present in the case, so it was not necessary to call the audience. He also admitted that the police could interrogate 1-2 audiences.

Kamra’s response when police reaches home

The Mumbai Police arrived on 31 March 2025 for questioning at Kunal Kamra’s old address at Mahim, but he was not present there. On this, Kamra reacted to the social media platform ‘X’ and wrote:

“To go to a address where I have not been there for the last 10 years, your time and public resources are a waste…”

Significantly, the Mumbai Police called Kamra for questioning twice so far, but he has not appeared yet.

Shiv Sena’s response

Shiv Sena leader Rahul Kanal has reacted strongly to the issue. He said that the party has written a letter to the Mumbai Police demanding an inquiry against Kunal Kamra under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).

Kanal said,
“When Kunal Kamra comes to Mumbai, she will be welcomed by the Shiv Sena manner. We will not change our stand, because there is no change in their attitude.”

He also claimed that the Tamil Nadu police is giving protection to Kamra.

What is the case?

The Mumbai Police gave Kamra notice to appear on 31 March. This notice was issued during his show to make derogatory remarks against Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Now this matter is taking political color and the scope of investigation is also increasing.
