The court has sentenced Sanjay Roy, convicted in the case of rape and murder of a female doctor of RG Kar Hospital, Kolkata, to life imprisonment till his death. Along with this, a fine of Rs 50 thousand has also been imposed. The court has ordered the state government to pay compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the victim’s family.

The convict’s mother expressed embarrassment

After the sentencing, the convict’s mother, 75-year-old Malti Roy, confined herself to home and refused to talk to journalists. “I am ashamed of everything,” he said. Please leave me alone.” Earlier, Malti had said that she could understand the pain of the lady doctor’s parents and would accept whatever punishment her son received.

Mother’s statement after punishment

When Sealdah Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das pronounced the sentence on Monday, Malti said that she would accept it as her destiny. “Even if the court had awarded him death sentence, I would have had no objection,” he said.

Reaction of family and neighbors

No member of Sanjay’s family was present in the court. Neighbors and relatives expressed doubt over the incident, saying that Sanjay could not have committed the crime alone. Neighbor Urmila Mahato said that Sanjay used to go to boxing classes and had joined the civil volunteer wing of Kolkata Police three years ago. “His bad company and alcohol addiction made him fall to this level,” he said.

Mamta Banerjee’s reaction on the punishment

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed displeasure over the verdict, saying that if Kolkata Police had handled the case, the convict could have been awarded death sentence.
