Navi Mumbai: Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Navi Mumbai, has set a new benchmark in healthcare with the launch of India’s first indigenous robotic surgery system, the SSI Mantra. According to the hospital this machine is the first Indian made robotic surgery system.
The authorities further said that technology would bring advanced solutions for complex surgeries, including those of the prostate, urinary bladder, kidney, uterus, cervix, heart, abdomen, and ENT.
“Since its launch in July 2018, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital has been known for its patient-centric care and integration of innovative medical technologies. The hospital’s Mumbai branch has already achieved a remarkable milestone of completing over 2,600 robotic surgeries, particularly for prostate, kidney, and urinary bladder cancer. With the introduction of the SSI Mantra in Navi Mumbai, the hospital further cements its position as a pioneer in robotic surgery, offering precise, minimally invasive procedures for patients in the region,” Dr. Shashikant Pawar, Chief Operating Officer of the Navi Mumbai facility, said.
Developed by SS Innovations and approved by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), the SSI Mantra Robotic Surgery System represents a breakthrough in surgical precision and versatility. The system supports multiple specialties, including urology, gynecology, cardiology, and general surgery. Key features include telesurgery, teleproctoring, a modular multi-arm system, a 32-inch 3D 4K monitor, and over 40 robotic endo-surgical instruments.
The minimally invasive nature of robotic-assisted surgeries translates into faster healing, reduced pain, minimal scarring, and lower infection risks for patients. This innovative system allows surgeons to tackle highly complex cases with improved accuracy, leading to better outcomes and shorter hospital stays.
Dr. Santosh Shetty, Executive Director and CEO of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, highlighted the hospital’s commitment to innovation. “By introducing India’s first indigenous robotic surgery system in Navi Mumbai at our facility, we are reaffirming our dedication to leveraging innovation for the benefit of our patients,” he said.
Dr. Pawar emphasized the transformative impact of robotic-assisted surgery. “The SSI Mantra is a game-changer for both surgeons and patients. Its precision and dexterity allow surgeons to perform highly complex procedures with greater ease and accuracy. This results in faster recoveries and improved quality of life for patients,” he stated.
Till now, the hospital has conducted six surgeries using SSI Mantra before the official launch on Thursday. “All the doctors have undergone the training required to operate SSI Mantra. Use of SSI Mantra doesn’t mean that doctors are not required. It is the doctor that is doing the surgery and the command is given remotely to the robotic arms,” Dr Shetty emphasized.
A 40 year old Kharghar resident, Suman Bhadra, was one to the patients to undergo gall bladder surgery with the help of SSI Mantra. “A routine body check up revealed that I had gall bladder stone. The doctors gave me two options- a laproscopic surgery or robotic surgery. The difference was in the minimal cut, fewer hospital stay, less bleeding and less pain. So I opted robotic surgery and on the same day of surgery I was able to walk and within two days I was back home and resumed by routine,” Bhadra said.
