Surat is one of the fastest growing cities of India. It is a busy hub of trade & commerce with trade connections around the country. Surat is the centre of diamond trade in the world along with a bustling textile industry. There are ample of employment opportunities in Surat due to the range of economic activities in the city. WR understands the utmost importance that Surat holds in the overall commercial trade activities of Gujarat and of the country. To meet the growing demand of this progressive city, WR runs several trains connecting Surat to different parts of India. Taking into account the huge footfalls at this station, Indian Railways is transforming the entire facet of Surat station and now this busy station is being developed into a world class station.
Redevelopment Work Commences
The redevelopment work of Surat station has commenced and is progressing in full swing. The work is being undertaken by Surat Integrated Transport Corporation (SITCO) which is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) formed between the Indian Railways & Government of Gujarat. The station is being redeveloped at an estimated cost of RS. 980 crore. It is targeted to be completed by December 2026.
Surat station is being developed as a Multi – Modal Transport Hub (MMTH) which will integrate Railways, GSRTC City Bus Terminal station, Surat BRTS/ City Bus station, Metro, etc to provide seamless connectivity under one roof. Surat station has been designed keeping in mind the architectural ambience and to ensure that the entire station premises of the project should also have the look and feel of a business centre of international standards along with operation & functionality of different mode of transportation. The unified theme of the facade, finishes, colours, materials, textures will add to its splendour.
The Phase I of the station redevelopment work comprising of major utility shifting works of EI building, RPF Barracks, Hospital Unit & Running Room have been completed & handed over to Railway. Western Railway extends its gratitude to the public, especially the esteemed passengers for their full support & co-operation during this period. The work on East side Railway Station Building is also moving ahead at a great pace.
Similarly, the concourse work over Platform No. 4 in connection with the ongoing Station Redevelopment work (Phase-II) of Surat station has been completed. The block for undertaking the work on Platform No. 2 & 3 will be started from 8th January, 2025.
In view of this, the terminal of few trains originating/departing from Surat railway station is being temporarily shifted to Udhna. Some of the MEMU/Passenger trains will also short terminate/originate from Udhna, Bhestan and Navsari stations. The change of terminal shall provide operational flexibility, reduce congestion at Surat station, allow augmenting and upgradation of passenger services and enable faster execution of the ongoing infrastructural project in Surat.
