Early life of Sukhdev Thapar
Sukhdev Thapar was born on May 15, 1907, in Naughara in Ludhiana. His childhood was filled with hardships. After losing his father, Ram Lal Thapar, at a young age, Sukhdev was brought up by his mother, Ralli Devi, and uncle Achait Ram Thapar.
From a young age, Sukhdev demonstrated a rebellious spirit and always refused to salute British officers who visited his school. He became a part of the Naujawan Bharat Seva, an organisation that was initiated by Bhagat Singh in 1926. Both worked in close bonds and worked together for the cause. Thapar participated in many activities to evoke national consciousness among the youth.
Sukhdev Thapar fought against the Britishers
Sukhdev Thapar was part of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) and set up revolutionary groups in Punjab and various regions of North India. A dedicated leader, he also taught the youth at the National College in Lahore, profoundly motivating them about India’s magnificent history. Sukhdev was actively involved in numerous revolutionary actions, such as the ‘Prison hunger strike’ in 1929.
He was caught after the Lahore Conspiracy
The Lahore Conspiracy Case was a pivotal event in India’s struggle for independence, following the death of Lala Lajpat Rai. In response to Rai’s death, Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev Thapar targeted a police officer named J.S. Scott, who had been involved in a lathi charge that led to Rai’s demise.
However, in a tragic mistake, they ended up killing another police officer, John P. Saunders, in Lahore instead of J.S. Scott. Subsequently, Bhagat Singh and his associates were arrested and put on trial for this incident, which ultimately led to their execution by the British government.
