International Development Week (IDW) is an annual event which is observed during the first full week of February to raise awareness about global development issues and highlight the efforts of individuals, organisations, and governments working toward a more equitable and sustainable world. This year the event will observe from Sunday, February 2 to February 8, 2025.

Why do we celebrate International Development Week?

International Development Week was originated in Canada in 1991 and has since gained international recognition. It serves as a platform to discuss key issues such as: poverty eradication, climate action, gender equality, Human rights and social justice, and education and healthcare access. IDW promotes the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and encourages individuals and organisations to take part in global efforts to create a better future. The event:

1. Educates people about international cooperation and aid programs.

2. Encourages youth participation in development initiatives.

3. Recognises the contributions of Canadian and global development organisations.

4. Fosters cross-border collaboration for solving global challenges.

International Development Week 2025 is a reminder that every individual and organisation can contribute to building a more sustainable, just, and inclusive world.
