Satna (Madhya Pradesh): Inserting a rod into the broken leg of a human takes place daily. But has anyone ever come across an incident in which a knell has been inserted into the broken leg of a peacock to make it walk? Amazing though it may sound, it happened in the Satna district veterinary hospital. A rod was inserted into one of the broken legs of a peacock to fix it.

Just as a resident of Kripalpur village Dasrath found something bright blue lying on the roadside near a forest, a few yards off his house, he walked up to the spot.

To his surprise, there was a peacock, lying on the roadside, writhing in pain.

Meanwhile, another person identified as Surendra Choudhary reached the spot and tried to make the peacock fly, but it was not able to move.

They then informed the sub-divisional officer of the forest department Lal Sudhakar Singh.

After the forest officials, led by Narendra Payasi, came and picked up the peacock from the road, it came to light that there was a muffled crack in one of its legs. So, it was unable to fly.

They took the peacock to the district veterinary hospital, where veterinary Brihaspati Bharti told the officials that surgery was the only way out.

The forest officials agreed with him. But it was a challenge because such an operation is rarely performed on animals, especially on birds.

Then Bharti and his team consisting of four members gave anaesthesia to the injured peacock. The operation continued for two hours.

The team of doctors inserted the knell into the peacock’s broken leg. The bird gradually came round. It was a joy for the doctors as well as for the forest officials.

Bharti said that the rod would remain in the leg of the peacock which should be monitored for 20 days, and if there was no problem, it should be released into the wild.

After the treatment, when Bharti issued a fitness certificate, the forest team took the peacock to Mukundpur zoo.  All of them prayed: “Long live national bird…!”
