Venki Mysore, CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), recently revealed why the franchise handed over Ajinkya Rahane instead of Venkatesh Iyer bought at a record price?
Last season Shreyas Iyer was the captain of the team and also made KKR the champion. But this time the franchise neither retained him nor bought it in auction. In such a situation, there was speculation that Venkatesh Iyer, who was bought for Rs 23.75 crore, could become a new captain. However, KKR handed over the captaincy to veteran Ajinkya Rahane purchased for just Rs 1.5 crore.

Why did KKR not make Venkatesh Iyer captain?
KKR did not retain Venkatesh Iyer, but brought him back to the team after spending Rs 23.75 crore in the mega auction.
- If KKR retained them, they could have been signed for a maximum of Rs 18 crore.
- On the question of captaincy, KKR gave a leadership to veteran Ajinkya Rahane, while Venkatesh Iyer was made Vice-Capten.
KKR’s CEO Venky Mysore gave clarification on the decision of captaincy and said:
“We think very well about Venkatesh Iyer, but the captaincy can be very challenging for a young player. This is a difficult responsibility, which requires stable brain, maturity and experience. This is why we chose Ajinkya Rahane as captain. ”
Why Rahane’s experience is important for KKR?
Ajinkya Rahane has also captained the IPL earlier and has been captain in 11 matches for the Indian team.
- India won the historic Test series in Australia under Rahane’s captaincy.
- He has also been the captain of the Mumbai team in domestic cricket.
- The 185 IPL match and the experience of more than 200 international matches make him a trusted leader.
Venky Mysore said:
“Rahane has been playing since the first season of IPL. His experience will be beneficial for the current champion KKR. This is a perfect decision for captaincy. “
