Amid the ongoing farmers’ agitation on the Punjab-Haryana border, farmers have announced to organize a big Kisan Mahapanchayat in Khanauri on January 4. This Mahapanchayat is being organized to put pressure on the Central Government regarding its key demands, especially the guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Organization and objective of Mahapanchayat

The Mahapanchayat is being organized by farmer organizations Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha.

  • Farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohar said:

“Lakhs of farmers will gather at Khanauri border on January 4. This Mahapanchayat will be a symbol of the unity of the farmers and the fight for their rights.”

  • This event shows the commitment of farmers towards their rights and demand for guarantee on MSP.

Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s health is deteriorating.

The decision of this Mahapanchayat has been taken at a time when the health of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is on hunger strike since November 26, is continuously deteriorating.

  • Dallewal wants to meet the farmers he has served for 44 years.
  • Doctors have warned that his health can go out of control at any time.

Supreme Court’s strict comment

  • On Saturday, December 28, the Supreme Court reprimanded the Punjab government.
  • The court said that negligence in health services cannot be tolerated during the farmers’ protest.
  • Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh said that a team of 8 doctors has been formed to monitor Dallewal’s health.

Jagjit Singh Dallewal: Symbol of the farmers’ movement

70 year old Jagjit Singh Dallewal has become the new identity of the farmers movement.

  • His deteriorating health has drawn the attention of the government, the opposition, and the Supreme Court.
  • Dallewal’s possible address in the Mahapanchayat on January 4 can play an important role in deciding the next strategy of the movement.

Possible impact of Mahapanchayat

  1. Promote unity of farmers:
The presence of lakhs of farmers will show that they are united in the fight for MSP and farmers’ rights.
  2. Pressure on the government:
Through this Mahapanchayat, the pressure on the government to accept the demands of the farmers will increase.
  3. Extension of movement:
After the Mahapanchayat, the direction of the next phase of the movement will be decided.
