A portion of the divider on the Kharegaon Creek Bridge, a critical structure on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway, collapsed on Saturday. Authorities from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) confirmed that while the roads on the bridge remain intact and in good condition, safety barricades have been installed at the affected section as a precautionary measure. Immediate repairs on the divider are set to begin soon, according to an official statement.

The Mumbai-Nashik Highway is vital for the movement of heavy vehicles, particularly those travelling from JNPT port in Uran towards Nashik, Gujarat, and Bhiwandi. Many trucks and freight carriers use the Mumbra bypass via Kharegaon to access these regions. Additionally, the route experiences constant traffic from private vehicles. Even a minor accident or a vehicle breakdown can cause significant congestion, affecting roadways throughout Mumbai. This makes the Kharegaon stretch a critical transport link.

The highway is currently undergoing widening works to connect with the remaining stretch of Samruddhi Mahamarg. The Kharegaon Creek Bridge, approximately 30-35 years old, is slated for reinforcement after the construction of a new parallel bridge.

On Saturday night, workers engaged in the construction of the new bridge noticed the collapse of a portion of the divider and immediately informed MSRDC officials. In response, the authorities promptly installed barricades to secure the area and prevent any mishaps. The quick action averted potential dangers, and both directions of traffic on the bridge remain uninterrupted.

MSRDC officials have assured that strengthening work on the old bridge will commence once the new structure is completed, ensuring long-term safety and efficiency for commuters on this critical route.
