Mumbai: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, a pain relief operation theatre (OT) was recently inaugurated at KEM Hospital to treat patients suffering from chronic pain. The OT is designed for patients experiencing severe pain, especially those who do not find relief through conventional medications or therapies. Pain management specialists, including pain physicians and anaesthesiologists, provide treatments tailored to alleviate suffering.
Statement Of Dr. Sangeeta Ravat, The Hospital Dean
“The facility aims to provide relief to patients suffering from chronic pain, including back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, migraines, cancer pain, and more,” said Dr Sangeeta Ravat, the hospital dean.
Statement Of Dr Sweta Salgaonkar
Dr Sweta Salgaonkar, who leads the initiative, said, “Chronic pain patients often experience debilitating effects on their daily lives and relationships. Many are unable to perform routine tasks, and some even leave jobs due to the pain. This specialised theatre will provide a spectrum of pain management therapies to improve their quality of life.”
Acknowledging the growing need, the head of anaesthesia, Dr Amala Kudalkar, proposed the idea of a pain OT. The team treats both cancer-related and noncancer chronic pain. Common cases include sciatica, shoulder pain, knee osteoarthritis and migraines.
