Bollywood actress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kangana Ranaut is currently busy with the promotions of her film Emergency, which is based on the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975. During one of her latest interviews, Kangana revealed that she will invite the Gandhi-Nehru family for a special screening of the film.
Opening up about meeting Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, Kangana said, “I actually met Priyanka Gandhi ji in Parliament, and the first thing I told her was, ‘Aapko Emergency dekhni chahiye.’ She was very gracious and responded, ‘Yeah, maybe.’ I said, ‘You will quite like it.’ Let’s see if they want to watch the film.”
On playing the role of Indira Gandhi in the film, she said, “I believe it’s a very sensitive and sensible portrayal of one episode and one personality. I’ve taken great care to portray Mrs. Gandhi with dignity. During my research, I noticed a lot of focus on her personal life—her relationship with her husband, friends, and controversial equations. I thought to myself, there is so much more to a person.”
Emergency Controversies
Emergency is finally scheduled to hit the big screens on January 17. However, it faced several hurdles, especially during receiving certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). It was initially scheduled to release theatrically on September 6.
Additionally, it faced opposition from certain Sikh organisations, who accused the makers of misrepresentation and objected to its release.
Earlier, Kangana had also revealed that she had to sell her Mumbai property to fund the project after the postponement, an ordeal she never anticipated while bringing this film to life.
The film brings to life the political chessboard of the time, from Jayaprakash Narayan’s fiery protests (Anupam Kher) to Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s oratorical brilliance (Shreyas Talpade).
Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw is played by Milind Soman, Pupul Jayakar by Mahima Choudhary, and Jagjivan Ram by late actor Satish Kaushik. Vishak Nair will be seen playing the role of Sanjay Gandhi in the political drama.
