Washington DC: A awkward moment at the swearing-in ceremony of US Senators on Friday grabbed headlines when Republican Senator Deb Fischer’s husband appeared to refuse to shake hands with Vice President Kamala Harris. A video of the incident started doing rounds on social media.

The Vice President responded to the entire incident with a smile. She even eased the tension by saying, “It’s okay, I won’t bite. Don’t worry.” Bruce Fischer just smiled briefly and when Harris extended her had for a handshake, he declined. He just said “Thank You”. The Vice President gave an eyebrow-raising reaction on this awkward moment.
Bruce Fischer was slammed for his behaviour. “The husband of a Republican senator just refused to shake hands or make eye contact with Vice President Harris. The level of class you can expect from MAGA,” wrote Liberal podcaster Brian Tyler Cohen on his X account.
Author Don Winslow called Bruce Fischer’s behaviour “disgraceful”. Radio host Roland Martin also waded in and criticizes the Senator’s husband.
On the other side, Republicans came in support of Bruce Fischer. They gave an argument that he was holding a cane in one hand and the Bible in another, so he could not shake hand.
