Jobless teachers protest outside Bikash Bhawan amid police clashes in Kolkata | X

Kolkata: Despite clashes with police, jobless teachers continue with their protests outside Bikash Bhawan on Saturday. Talking to the media, the protestors said that despite odds they will stick to their protests till they get back their legitimate jobs.

“I have twin babies at home and they are aware of the fact that their mother had gone for protests. I am making video calls to them to inquire about them. But I will not leave the protests till our jobs are restored,” said a protestor and resident of Nadia district.

Leader of the protest Chinmoy Mondal by playing a call recording cleared that they didn’t stop a pregnant government employee.

“We have tried our level best to cooperate with the government employees. We tried to evacuate the pregnant state government employee stuck inside the Bikash Bhawan. That woman’s relative called me and immediately we tried to release her,” mentioned Mondal.

Notably, on Friday, ADG South Bengal Supratim Sarkar claimed that police had to use minimal force to evacuate the employees stuck inside Bikash Bhawan including a pregnant woman.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato writes to the Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court urging him to take suo motu cognizance against the alleged brutality of the state police on the jobless teachers.

“I am writing to you as a Member of Parliament and public representative from West Bengal to bring to your urgent attention a grave incident of police brutality that occurred on May 15, 2025, during a protest by teachers and non-teaching staffs outside Bikash Bhawan, the State Education Department headquarters in Salt Lake, Kolkata. This incident involved excessive use of force by the police, resulting in severe injuries to numerous teachers, as well as police inaction during attacks on the protesters by certain Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders. The actions of the police appear to have violated several provisions of Indian law, particularly under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and have raised serious concerns about the protection of fundamental rights and the rule of law. I respectfully request your esteemed court to take suo motu cognisance of this matter to ensure justice and accountability,” read part of the letter.

On the other hand, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Mayor Firhad Hakim and TMC leader Kunal Ghosh called the protests as ‘drama’ and ‘cam look’.
