A 25-year-old salesman who worked in a jewelry shop died after two assailants on a bike came and fired one bullet at him and one employee in Shahpur on Saturday night. Two assailants decamped with a bag from them.
The deceased salesman has been identified as Dinesh Kumar Manaram Chaudhary, 25. While the other one managed to escape safely. Police said the contents in the bag are only documents and a register book.
The incident took place outside Mahalaxami Jewelers shop in Godeghar, located in Pandit Nagar, Shahapur, on Saturday night at 9:15 PM, when the salesman and three employees of the shop closed the shop and were on their way home.
Two bike-borne assailants came on a motorcycle and allegedly fired bullets at two people, including the salesman, injuring him while another employee managed to escape safely. Meanwhile, the other two employees were ahead of them.
The locals rushed to the spot after hearing the gunfire and found the salesman lying in a pool of blood. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where he was referred to a hospital in Thane, where he was declared dead during further treatment on Sunday.
The Shahapur police rushed to the spot after the incident came to light. A case was registered against two unknown individuals. Preliminary investigation indicated that one bullet was fired at close range at Chaudhary. Chaudhary sustained serious injuries to his waist.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Milind Shinde, from Shahapur Division said, “Prima facie, it was learned that the offence may have been committed with the intention of robbery. However, we will verify another angle as well. So far, eight teams, including the local crime branch, have been formed, and they are all investigating various aspects. One of those teams was going through the CCTV footage installed in the nearby locality.”
