Hollywood singer-actress Jennifer Lopez has been sued by a paparazzi agency for using its photos of her on social media without getting due permission from the photographer. The paps are now seeking $150,000 in damages for each image, which is roughly around Rs 1.28 crore.
The lawsuit has been filed by photographer Edwin Blanco and his agency, Backgrid, who claim that Lopez posted the copyrighted photos on her Instagram handle without valid authorisation.
The photos in question were taken in January when the 55-year-old star attended a party hosted by Amazon MGM Studios and Vanity Fair in Los Angeles, on the night before the Golden Globe Awards 2025. At the event, Lopez wore a white gown and a faux fur coat, and she was clicked by the paparazzi outside the Chateau Marmont, the location of the event.
She later shared the photos as a part of her Instagram post, with the caption, “GG Weekend Glamour”.
According to reports, the agency in its complaint stated that the photos were used in a way that promoted Lopez’s public persona and increased interaction on her social media. The agency also claimed that the photos helped her grab eyeballs for her fashion choices and brand collaborations, and the usage can be counted as “commercial use”.
“Ms Lopez’s unauthorised use of the Images is commercial in nature, intended for the purpose of self-promotion. For example, Ms Lopez used the Images to spotlight the designer of her clothing and jewellery, leveraging the publicity from the event to promote her fashion affiliations and brand partnerships,” a part of the lawsuit reads, as per a BBC report.
This isn’t the first time Lopez has been involved in such legal issues. She was previously sued in 2019 and 2020 for similar incidents involving unlicensed use of professional photos.
Lopez’s team is yet to issue an official statement on the fiasco.
