New Delhi: Political heat has intensified due to Waqf law. Janata Dal (United) i.e. JDU has not yet taken its clean stand on it, but has indicated that it does not fully agree with the bill. The bill is likely to be introduced in the Lok Sabha on 2 April.
JDU Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Jha has given a statement that the party has urged the ally BJP not to implement the Waqf law with a previous effect. He says, “We have told the government that this law should not be applicable from the back date. We hope that the government will consider it… As long as Nitish Kumar is in politics, the rights of the public will continue to be protected.”
Center refused JDU’s terms
Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurien, however, has denied that such a demand has been made by JDU. He said, “I don’t know where you got this information…”
At the same time, Minister Kurien is confident that the bill will be passed in both houses. He said that “people will force opposition MPs too… Even the decision of the Catholic Bishop Conference is forcing MPs to think differently from their party. All communities will support it, including poor Muslims.”
Congress retaliation – “If supported, Muslims will not vote”
Congress MP from Saharanpur Imran Masood openly challenged NDA allies like JDU, LJP (Ram Vilas) and TDP. They said,
“If you vote in favor of the Waqf Bill, then Muslims will never vote for you.”
JDU and TDP retaliation – ‘We do not want a certificate from Congress’
JDU leader and Union Minister Lallan Singh retorted on Congress and said,
“The Congress did not do as much as Nitish Kumar has done for Muslims. JDU does not need to take any certificate from Congress.”
Here, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has also kept its stand open at the moment but has assured that Chandrababu Naidu will take a decision keeping in mind the interest of Muslims.
TDP spokesperson Prem Kumar Jain said,
“Our party is in the interest of the Muslim community. After the bill is introduced, we will clean our stand, but Naidu ji has always stood with the minorities.”
