Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah created history in the latest ICC Test rankings on Wednesday. He has become the first Indian fast bowler to reach the top in the bowlers’ rankings. Bumrah achieved this feat by scoring 907 rating points. He broke the record of recently retired spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who had the best score of 904 rating points in 2016.

Bumrah created this new record on the basis of his brilliant performance in the fourth test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. His 907 points leave him tied for 17th on the all-time list with England’s Derek Underwood.

Bumrah’s strong performance in Border-Gavaskar Trophy

    • So far Bumrah has taken 30 wickets at an average of less than 20.
    • India, however, is trailing 1-2 in the five-Test series.
  • Final Test:
The fifth and final match of the series will be played from Friday, in which all eyes will be on Bumrah’s performance.

Indian fast bowler who took the fastest 200 test wickets

While playing at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Bumrah made another big record in his name.

  • He became the fastest Indian fast bowler to take 200 Test wickets.
  • Kapil Dev’s record broken:
    • Kapil Dev had achieved this feat in 50 test matches in 1983.
  • Achievement in 44 Tests:
Bumrah achieved this milestone in just 44 test matches.
  • Joint second place with Jadeja:
By achieving this feat, he jointly got the distinction of becoming the second fastest Indian along with Ravindra Jadeja.

Australia’s Pat Cummins’s performance

Australia captain and fast bowler Pat Cummins also made a significant rise in the rankings.

  • Bowlers’ ranking:
    • By taking 6 wickets in the fourth test, he collected 15 rating points and reached third place.
  • Allrounder Ranking:
    • After playing a brilliant inning of 90 runs in the Melbourne Test, he also reached the third position in the Test all-rounder rankings.

Indian team’s challenges

  • Poor batting performance:
    • Despite Bumrah’s strong performance, the Indian batsmen could not perform as per expectations, due to which the team lagged behind in the series.
  • Dependence on Final Test:
To save the series, India will have to perform better in every department in the final Test.
