Japan’s act: 3D printed railway station built in only 6 hours, for the first time in the world

Japan has always been a pioneer in terms of technology and speed. Its bullet trains are considered to be the fastest and safe in the world. Now Japan has also shown an act in the field of railway construction which is unprecedented – an entire railway station was prepared in just 6 hours. It is the first station in the world to be made up of 3D printing technology. How did this extraordinary construction happen?

The West Japan Railway Company has built this station in Arida City, which was designed to replace the already existing wooden station. According to the New York Times report, the project is considered an important step for the future of Railway Infrastructure.

The project was carried out by a construction company called Srendics, which prepared it from prefabricated 3D printed components. These components were prepared in 7 days in a factory in the island of Kyushu, where their printing and concrete reinforcement was completed. After this, they were rushed to Arida, 804 km by road.

Station and service of station

This station is known as Hatsushima and on an average 530 passenger movement here. It is a small railway line station where one to three trains come and go every hour. The services here are automated since the year 2018.

Construction done overnight

On the night of 24 March, when the last train left the station at 11:57 pm, the components from the trucks reached there. The construction work started immediately and with the help of heavy cranes, each part was fitted at the designated place. The entire assembly process was completed in just 6 hours and the station was fully ready before the first train arrived at 5:45 am. However, some facilities like ticket machine and IC card reader will be installed later. It is expected that this station will be completely operational by July 2025.

Saving cost and time

Kunihiro Handa, co-founder of Srendics, said that the traditional construction system would cost at least two months and nearly double cost. Using 3D printed components, the construction was not only intensified, but also reduced the need for labor. Given Japan’s elderly population and limited human resources, this model can emerge as a solution to railway infrastructure and staffing challenges in remote areas.
