Kolkata, 28 November (HS). Under the ‘Taruner Swapna’ scheme of West Bengal, funds are given for tablets to students of class 11th and 12th. But recently, cases of large-scale corruption and misappropriation of funds have come to light in this scheme. Many arrests have been made in this scam that started from Chopra of North Dinajpur. The state government has now confirmed the involvement of the notorious ‘Jamtara Gang’ behind this scam. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took a tough stance on this issue in the Assembly on Thursday and said that she should bring a new law and develop a strict mech.sm.
The Chief Minister said that we trust everyone, but everyone is not equal. That’s why strict laws are being made. Jamtara gang hacked public money given for tablets of students. We have spent Rs 1600 crore under this scheme. Many accused have been arrested so far. But a special mech.sm is being made to ensure that such incidents do not happen in future. If anyone does this again, he will be punished severely.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the District Police and Kolkata Police has been formed to investigate the tab scam. Most of the accused arrested so far are from North Bengal. During investigation, it was found that a network like ‘Jamtara Gang’ was active behind the irregularities in bank accounts.
The Chief Minister also said that the manner in which this scam has come to light shows that there is a need for strong laws to stop corruption in the state. He said that such a scam happened in Gujarat, but the administration there did nothing. We not only caught it but have also initiated legal action. The Chief Minister assured that the students will be given their tablets and the state government will take strict action to prevent any kind of financial misappropriation.
The stand of the state government in this matter is clear that corruption will not be tolerated under any circumstances and strict laws will be implemented for it.
