Greenland: America wants to buy Greenland. US President Donald Trump has been showing interest in it for a long time. After all, which treasure is hidden in Greenland, America is desperate to find? Trump showed interest in rare minerals and Greenland during his first term. Trump is not the first US President to suggest buying Greenland. The view was first revealed by the 17th President of the United States Andrew Johnson in the 1860s. Now Greenland is again in the news.

Uranium reserves under snow in Greenland

The population of Greenland Island with an area of 2.1 million square kilometers is only 57 thousand. The economy of Greenland, which attains widespread autonomy, is dependent on Danish subsidy and is part of the Denmark Empire. 80 percent of this island is permanently covered with ice in abundance. Greenland has reserves of uranium under snow. In 2021, the Greenland government banned its mining. According to a 2023 survey, 34 minerals were classified as the required raw materials by the European Union. Of these, 25 minerals are found in Greenland.

Greenland has 25 percent of the world’s rare elements

Apart from this, zinc, diamonds and uranium for nuclear technology are also available for batteries. Adam Simon, professor and geologist at the University of Michigan, said that 25 percent of the world’s rare soil elements could be in Greenland. This material can be 1.5 million tonnes. There are not only the huge stores of copper, graphite, neobium, titanium, diamonds and rhodium, but also important reserves of rare soil minerals. Neodimiums and presodimiums found here have special magnetic properties, which make them useful in the production of turbines required for electric vehicles and wind energy production. This may benefit the government from billions of dollars. But, people here believe that so much digging here can lead to bad results. On the other hand, America is eager to buy it.
