In times when people are looking for jobs which would help them strike a better work-life balance, a comment made by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Chairman SN Subrahmanyan has ignited a significant controversy. The L&T chairman made headlines for advocating for a 90-hour work week, including Sundays. In a viral video from an internal meeting, he expressed regret for not being able to mandate Sunday work. His 90-hour work week remark has upset netizens and resulted in a meme fest on social media.

Notably, SN Subrahmanyan’s words came after Infosys’ Narayana Murthy had announced about 70-hour work week for his employees. While reacting to the recent case, netizens were seen comparing the L&T chairman with Murthy.

X users on work-life balance

Along with memes that were inspired by popular films and sitcoms, long-form and thoughtful messages on the matter also surfaced online. The backlash on social media was swift and fierce, with many users criticizing Subrahmanyan’s remarks as unrealistic and detrimental to mental health.

RPG Enterprises Chairman Harsh Goenka sarcastically suggested renaming Sunday to “Sun-duty,” emphasising the need for a day off from office. He also said, “Work-life balance isn’t optional, it’s essential”.

Meanwhile, popular YouTuber and educator Sahil Bhadviya called it a “shame” on bosses like Subrahmanyan to want their employees to come on duties even Sundays, otherwise a week off from work.

“Its only because of poor labor law in India, L&T Chairman has the guts to say he regret not able to work employees on Sunday. Such a shame. He clearly doesn’t have any personal life. And want others to not have either”, he said in an X post.
