The mystery of sudden mass baldness of people in 11 villages of Buldhana district of Nagpur is still unsolved. On the instructions of Union Minister of State Prataprao Jadhav, a team of ICMR scientists from Delhi and Chennai have camped in Shegaon to investigate the situation. According to the report, this investigation team includes experts in Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Unani and Allopathy. So far, 250 people have become bald, while 600 others are showing symptoms of this disease.

Symptoms of ‘bald virus’

Local people are calling this mysterious disease spread in Shegaon, Nagpur as ‘Ganja virus’. The affected villages include Pahurjira, Kalvad, Kathora, Bhongaon, Bondgaon, Hingna, Bhota and Pahur Purna. Symptoms of this disease first include itching on the scalp, followed by rapid hair fall. In some cases, individuals have been reported to lose all their hair in just three days. Due to this disease, concern has increased among the local population and people are demanding clarification from the government.

Authorities have taken swift action to determine the cause of this outbreak. Samples of water and other possible sources from the area have been collected. There is much speculation about the cause of the disease, including water pollution, fungal infection, malnutrition, or allergy to chemicals and cosmetics.

The ICMR team that reached Shegaon on January 14 included Dr. Manoj Murhekar (ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai), Dr. Somesh Gupta (AIIMS, New Delhi), Dr. Sumit Aggarwal (ICMR, New Delhi), Dr. Sheela Godbole ( ICMR-National Institute of Translational Virology, Pune), Dr. Raj Tiwari (ICMR-National Institute of Research in Environmental Health, Bhopal) and Dr. Eminent experts like Suchit Kamble (ICMR-National Institute of Translational Virology, Pune) are included. These experts are trying to find out the causes of this mysterious disease as soon as possible.
