International Nurse Day is celebrated worldwide on 12 May. There are some important things behind celebrating this day. International Nurse Day is celebrated for expressing gratitude to nurses who are always ready to serve patients by keeping their domestic festivals separate. The International Nurse Conference was held in 1971. It was the birthday of Lady Florence Nightingel, founder of modern nursing. Since then his birthday has been celebrated as World Nurse Day. In addition, Florence Nightingale laid the foundation of modern nursing. Therefore, in his memory, May 12 is celebrated as International Nurse Day all over the world.
History of Nurse Day:
Florence Nightingale was born on 12 May 1820 in Florence, William and Fanny Nightingel in Italy. After that he was raised in England. However, at the age of 16, he realized that he was born to serve the public. Florence, which was excellent in three subjects: wanted to become mathematics, science and history, nurse. They wanted to help poor patients. However, his father was against his will. Because people who became nurses at that time had no significant importance in the society. However, he maintained his determination and started his nursing education in 1851. Then, in 1853, the first hospital for women was opened in a big country like England.
There was a war in Crimea in 1854. In the event of this war, British soldiers were sent to fight in Kamiya. Britain, France and Turkey fought with Russia. Many people were killed in this war. Apart from this, thousands of soldiers were also injured. On receiving information about the incident, she reached the spot with a team of Florence nurses. The situation there was very difficult due to the war. Many people were hit by serious diseases due to untouchable conditions, odor, lack of facilities and lack of drinking water, many of which died.
Florence began to bathe patients, feed them and focus on the ointment of the injured to improve the condition of the hospital. After that the situation of soldiers improved significantly. Apart from this, Florence Nightingale worked day and night for the soldiers injured in the war. Apart from this, a letter was also sent to the families of the soldiers. Due to all these achievements, Florence’s name spread throughout the world after the 1856 war.
Florence died on 13 August 1919. Since then, International Nurse Day has been celebrated everywhere in his honor. On this special occasion, nurses who have made outstanding contribution in the field of nursing are awarded the Florence Nightingale Award. Nurse Day is observed every year with a specific theme. This year is the theme of 2025 “Nurses: Health and Kalyan.”
