Pune: International Conference Highlights Indian Knowledge Tradition’s Role In Modern Education | Sourced

While understanding the importance of the Indian Knowledge Tradition, instead of merely glorifying our ancestors, it is necessary to become self-reliant by discovering innovation within the tradition and maintaining self-respect. The Indian knowledge tradition is a journey from science to wisdom, said senior educationist Dr Bhushan Patwardhan.

Dr Patwardhan was speaking at the inauguration of the two-day international conference on ‘IKS Teaching and Curriculum Designing: Challenges for Teachers and Future Pathways’ at Yashwantrao Mohite College, Kothrud Educational Complex of Bharati Vidyapeeth.

MLA Dr Vishwajeet Kadam, Vice-Chancellor Dr Vivek Saoji, Director of Maharashtra State Higher Education Department Dr Shailendra Deolankar, Dr Mohan Raghavan from IIT Hyderabad, Sanskrit scholar Dr Philip Rucinski from Poland, Yoga scholar Dr Lucy Guest from the UK, Co-Secretary Dr KD Jadhav, Dr MS Sagre, former Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University Prof Tariq Mansoor, Head of the Organising Committee Dr Vivek Rankhambe and Secretary of the Organising Committee Dr Suhas Mohite were all prominently present. Experts in Indian knowledge and philosophy, as well as speakers from Germany, Poland and England, attended the conference. The event is jointly organised by Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute Pune, Brihat, Siddhant Knowledge Foundation Chennai and Iksha.

“It is essential to emphasise the importance of the Indian knowledge tradition to students from their school years,” said Dr Patwardhan. He further noted that by newly conveying the sources of thought from the Indian knowledge tradition to students and rejecting the dominance of monoculture, proper upbringing can be achieved.

Dr Shailendra Deolankar remarked that the significance of the knowledge tradition will be highlighted through this conference, freeing Indians from mental slavery. He added that education is a critical pillar in realising the dream of a developed India. By conveying the glory of the Indian knowledge tradition alongside skill development, the country can become self-reliant in the future. Stopping the glorification of the Western world and making knowledge available in the mother tongue can help create a cultured generation.

MLA Dr Vishwajeet Kadam provided details about the activities planned during the two-day conference, stating that it will provide valuable awareness of the current realities for both teachers and students.

Dr Vivek Saoji emphasised that the conference was organised by Bharati Vidyapeeth to communicate the importance of the Indian knowledge tradition across various fields to both teachers and students, providing a new direction.

Head of the Organising Committee Dr Vivek Rankhambe welcomed the guests. The programme was moderated by Prof Mayuri Desle, and Dr Suhas Mohite delivered the vote of thanks.
