After the alleged attack on actor Saif Ali Khan, the Mumbai Police has intensified its action against Bangladeshi migrants living illegally in India by obtaining fake documents. A total of 500 Bangladeshi citizens have been arrested from the city in the last three months and the process of sending them back to the country is going on. A large number of fake documents have been seized from them.
A police officer said that a team of Mumbai Police is using ground intelligence techniques, using scrap dealers bases, slums, construction sites, shelter homes, abandoned buildings, chawls etc. near the beach, so that legal action can be taken to send them back to their country. The arrested Bangladeshi citizens had obtained fake documents like Aadhaar cards and some had also made fake passports.
Illegal entry from West Bengal
Most Bangladeshi citizens illegally enter India from West Bengal. In the last three months, the Mumbai Police has registered 307 FIRs between January to March this year under the Passport (Admission to India) Rules, 1950 and Foreign Act, 1946 and arrested about 500 Bangladeshi citizens during this period. The process of extinguishing it is going on. Last year we sent 180 illegal immigrants back to their home country, Bangladesh.
How is illegal immigrants deported?
Once illegal immigrants are arrested, the authorities accuse them as per the relevant legal provisions and wait for the court order before starting the exile. The illegal immigrants can be sent back to their country after being convicted and fulfilling their sentence. Since court proceedings take time, the number of exile is less than the number of arrests.
Problems due to lack of custody centers
There is a deficiency of a challenge in front of law enforcement. Where people living illegally in the country are kept in custody until their exile process is completed. “We have no dedicated custody center,” said an official. So we have to keep them in police lockup in Azad Maidan. Officials of the Mumbai Police’s I branch are responsible for taking the migrants to the border of West Bengal by train and sending them back. There, migrants are handed over to the Border Security Force, which coordinate with its counterparts to complete the process.
