Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Imagine a city aiming to be a world leader in converting garbage into bio-CNG, which is planning to make garbage lifting facility mobile app-based, which is aiming to be No 1 in air quality and is committed to make public transport a green initiative.
Welcome to Indore, the city which was adjudged cleanest city seven times in a row, which is getting itself all future-ready with such types of initiatives.
Reflecting all these and many more steps, mayor Pushyamitra Bharagav on Thursday presented Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC)’s Rs 8,236.98 crore budget laying out the roadmap for the city’s financial and infrastructural growth in the financial year 2025-26.
The budget focuses on infrastructural development, digital transformation and environmental sustainability with no new taxes imposed or hike in existing ones.
“With Vision 2050, I am presenting this budget to make Indore a clean, prosperous, self-reliant and sustainable city, which is not only future-ready but also unmatched not only in the country but also globally. This budget will have long lasting effect,” said Bhargav in his budget speech during IMC’s council meeting on Thursday.
Talking about the roads of the city he said, While the construction of 23 roads under the master plan had already been started, the construction of 10 more roads will be done this year itself.
The mayor also said that the IMC is going to instal a statue of former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Swami Vivekanand.
The mayor stated that Indore is going to set new benchmarks on the cleanliness front by taking its bio-CNG plant capacity from 500 tonnes to 800 tonnes (thus becoming leader in the world) and introducing app on the lines of Zomato wherein requests for garbage lifting will be taken digitally.
Major announcements: A city ready for the future
The budget lays down key projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure, improving civic amenities, and maintaining Indore’s status as India’s cleanest city. Among the significant initiatives:
Smart urban planning and roads development
-Every household in Indore will receive a digital address, starting with Ward 82 as a pilot project
-Rs 130 crore will be spent on constructing 10 roads under the master plan -Two major intersections in each assembly constituency will undergo complete development and beautification
-All main roads in each constituency will be transformed into model roads with state-of-the-art facilities
-One white-topping road will be constructed in each constituency
-Green belts will be developed with public participation, integrating educational, health, and sports facilities
-A Rs 500 crore bond will be issued for infrastructure development
-An additional Rs 500 crore will be allocated for small road development
-A provision has been made for an ideal global garden in each ward
Revolutionising waste management under Swachh Bharat Mission
-Indore will move beyond wet and dry waste management to explore new dimensions of waste recycling and reuse
-Used clothes, fibre, and oil waste will be repurposed into reusable products
-A waste-to-charcoal project will convert RDF waste into charcoal, fostering green energy initiatives
-The Indore Zoo will be transformed into a zero-waste facility
-On-demand garbage collection will be digitised
-A new 200 TPD solid waste management plant will be set up
-Advanced sweeping machines will be procured
– 50 smart toilets will be constructed under the PPP model
-The capacity of Asia’s largest bio-CNG plant will be expanded from 550 tons per day to 800 tons per day
-India’s first 100-ton capacity PPP model plant will convert green waste into biofuel
Bridges, overpasses, and traffic management
Rs 80 crore has been allocated for bridge construction and maintenance.
-Rs 11 crore will be spent on constructing overpasses at 10 locations identified to reduce traffic congestion
-A major bridge will be constructed from Sirpur via Chandannagar Square to the district hospital at a cost of Rs 50 crore
-Left turns at 28 major intersections, including Geeta Bhavan and MG Road, will be widened
-A modern parking system using advanced technology will be introduced to maximise space utilisation
-A hawkers’ zone will be established at a cost of Rs 15 crore -Entry gates will be constructed at major city entry points
Sewerage and drainage management
-Three new sewage treatment plants (STPs) and two new common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) will be built
-A new 750 MLD STP will be developed at a cost of Rs 1,100 crore
-A 30-km pipeline will be laid to use treated water for greenery and industrial applications
-A riverfront development project will be initiated from the Municipal Corporation Square to Ahilya Ashram
-500 km of new drainage pipelines will be installed across the city
Water supply enhancements
-A Rs 2,134 crore project will be executed for the fourth phase of water supply improvement
-Restoration of existing water sources will be undertaken
-38 new water tanks will be constructed, and water pipeline networks will be expanded
-Deepening of reservoirs and construction of new water bodies are planned
-Renovation and beautification of ancient ghats will be carried out
-The western region will receive a 30 MLD sump well for enhanced water supply, costing Rs 17 crore
Electrification and street lighting
-A Rs 4.98 crore central lighting system will be installed on 20 major roads
-High-mast lighting will be installed at 21 key locations
-Rs 35 crore will be invested in LED street lights and Rs 50 crore in solar energy initiatives
-Rs 10 crore has been allocated for lighting in 85 wards and 85 parks
Workshops and fire safety improvements
-The municipal workshop will be digitised -100 door-to-door electric vehicles will be procured at a cost of Rs 100 crore
-A 70-meter turntable ladder will be purchased for high-rise fire safety -Fire bikes will be introduced for narrow-lane emergency response
-90 new trucks, tankers, dumpers, and other heavy vehicles will be added to the municipal fleet
-10 hydraulic platforms will be procured for the electrical department
-20 robotic machines will be purchased for the horticulture department
Boosting sports infrastructure
-Nehru Stadium and nearby sports complexes will be modernized with a Rs 500 crore investment
– Rs 16 crore from the state government will be used for infrastructure development in sports complexes
-Four new sports complexes will be developed at a cost of Rs 30 crore
– Rs 2 crore has been allocated for sports promotion in the city

Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav emphasised that this budget aligns with Indore’s long-term vision of becoming a self-sustainable and future-ready city. By incorporating digital advancements, environmental consciousness, and modern urban planning, the city is set to maintain its reputation as a clean and progressive metropolitan hub.
