Indore (Madhya Pradesh): As mercury remains above 40 and continues to soar across the region, the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) of Indore district Dr BS Setiya has issued a public warning regarding the increased risk of heat stroke during the ongoing summer season.

The advisory emphasizes that extreme heat can lead to serious health complications, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, outdoor laborers, and athletes.

Symptoms of heat stroke

The CMHO outlined key symptoms of heat stroke, which include absence of sweating, hot and dry reddish skin, nausea, headaches, fatigue, dizziness, vomiting, fainting, and contracted pupils. People experiencing these symptoms are urged to seek immediate medical attention.

In cases where going outdoors is necessary, individuals should use umbrellas and sunglasses for protection, and drink at least two glasses of water before stepping out. At the first sign of fever or heat exhaustion, people should immediately contact the nearest hospital and ensure appropriate medication is taken.

To protect against heat-related illnesses, the public is advised to drink plenty of water, avoid remaining on an empty stomach, and refrain from consuming alcohol or caffeine. Taking cold water baths, covering the head, and wearing light-colored, loose, and full-sleeved clothing are highly recommended.

The advisory also encourages the intake of ORS solution, coconut water, buttermilk, lemon water, and fresh fruit juices, which can help maintain hydration and prevent heatstroke.

Citizens are also urged not to leave children inside parked vehicles, and to avoid stepping outdoors between 12 noon and 4 PM, when the sun is at its peak. Walking barefoot in the sun and engaging in heavy physical work during the day should be strictly avoided, suggests CMHO in the advisory.
