Mumbai – Film director Manoj Kumar, who ruled the hearts of Indians with his patriotic films and soulful songs, died at a private hospital in Mumbai at around 4 am on Friday at the age of 87. With this, India has lost its original and most popular ‘Bharat Kumar’. Manoj Kumar, who has made his own way, has not only been an actor, but also a director, lyricist and film writer of many successful and experimental films, challenging the presence of many veteran actors in the 60s and 70s.
Manoj Kumar was admitted to the hospital for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. His liver also stopped working. Hospital sources said that he died due to various diseases. Manoj Kumar’s son Kunal Goswami said that his father’s funeral will be performed at Pawan Hans crematorium in Vile Parle at 11 am on Saturday. The Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri in 1992. Manoj Kumar was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honor of Indian cinema in 2015 for his contribution to Indian cinema. Manoj Kumar won a total of seven Filmfare Awards in various categories in his film career. Manoj Kumar’s family consists of his wife Shashi Goswami and two sons Vishal Goswami and Kunal Goswami.
Manoj Kumar was born on 24 July 1937 in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan). His original name was Harikrishna Goswami. When the country was divided, Manoj Kumar came to Delhi with his family at the age of ten. Manoj Kumar tried his luck in the film industry after obtaining a bachelor’s degree from Hindu College. During his struggle days in the film industry, he worked as a ghost writer for various studios. At that time, he used to get eleven rupees to write a scene.
Manoj Kumar worked in his first film in 1957 as an actor in the fashion brand. However, he gained fame after playing the lead role in the 1961 film glass doll. Then his famous film Vijay Bhatt’s greenery and path came, with his heroine Malasinha. In 1964, Manoj Kumar acted in various social films till his alien. On the suggestion of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, he made a Upkar film in 1968, which was based on the Indo-Pakistan War and the slogan of Jai Jawan Jai Kisan. After this, he also made his mark in the film industry as a director. He then created a spirit of patriotism through patriotic films by making films like man in 1968 and in 1970. Due to which he became famous as Bharat Kumar.
Manoj Kumar was a big fan of Dilip Kumar. After watching Dilip Kumar in the role of Manoj Kumar in the 1949 film Shabnam, Harikrishna Goswami changed his name to Manoj Kumar. In the 1981 film Revolution, Manoj Kumar directed his ideal Dilip Kumar. Interestingly, Dilip Kumar left the film world for five-six years after many films failed during that time. On the insistence of Manoj Kumar, he made a great comeback to cinema through revolution. After this Manoj Kumar acted in Kalyug and Ramayana in 1987, Clerk in 1989 and Maidan-e-Jung in 1995. He directed the film Jai Hind in 1999 with his son.
Regarding the fame received as Bharat Kumar, Manoj Kumar said in an interview that India’s crown has been provided to me by Indians, but it is a great burden and responsibility to lift it in his films and personal life. This is a great favor on me. I have seen many successes and failures and my countrymen also know them. I am an ordinary citizen.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to him on social media after Manoj Kumar’s death, saying that he was a big personality of Indian cinema. He will be particularly remembered for his patriotism, which was also reflected in his films.
