More Indian students are turning to new global study destinations, with Singapore, Ireland, and Dubai reporting a steep surge in popularity. These new hotspots have experienced a 38% surge in demand from Indian students over the last few years, a recent report by Gradding.com found.
The transition occurs in the same period when old favorites such as the UK, US, and Australia are declining. According to government statistics, in 2024 the number of Indian students studying overseas declined by almost 15%. Canada had the sharpest decline at 41%, with the UK suffering a fall of 27.7% and the US dropping by 13%.
Singapore, for example, has recorded a 25% year-on-year growth in Indian enrollments. Ireland and Dubai are also becoming popular due to their world-ranked universities, vocationally oriented courses, and lower fees compared to Western nations.
Greater collaboration between industries and institutions of higher education in these countries, especially in the fields of technology, finance, and healthcare, is another attraction for Indian students.
Although the UK, US, and Australia are still in favour, commentators say growing interest in non-traditional destinations is part of a wider shift in student priorities. As more students prioritise value for money and future career opportunities, Singapore, Ireland, and Dubai are set to emerge as top destinations in the next few years.
