Mumbai’s suburban railway network is set for a major upgrade as the Indian Railways has approved the procurement of 238 new local trains for the city, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced in Parliament recently.

‘A Good News For Mumbaikars,’ Says Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Vaishnaw called the development “good news for Mumbaikars,” acknowledging the long-standing demand for improved local train services. He revealed that the decision followed discussions with Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on enhancing Mumbai’s railway infrastructure.

“I was in Maharashtra, and during my discussions with Devendra Fadnavis regarding the improvement of Mumbai local trains, this topic came up. We are glad to announce that the procurement of 238 new local trains for Mumbai has been finally approved,” Vaishnaw stated.

However, the minister did not specify whether these trains would be air-conditioned. A proposal for 238 AC local trains has been pending with the railway ministry for the past few years. A railway official pointed out that while the plan for AC locals exists, Vaishnaw’s announcement did not confirm whether the newly approved trains will be air-conditioned.
