Indian Railway: Senior citizens and women can easily secure lower berths

Traveling in Indian Railways is not only comfortable, but it also saves time and money. If you are a senior citizen or a woman over 45 years of age, and want a lower berth or any other convenient seat while traveling in the train, you have to take some special steps to give you your favorite seat.

According to railway rules, senior priority and special priority to women

Indian Railways provides for special seats for senior citizens and women. Railway officials say that every coach is reserved for senior citizens and women. When seats are available during reservation, the computer automatically reserves lower seats for senior citizens and women.

Reserved seats: Senior Citizens and for women over 45 years of age

According to the Senior Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway, special seats are reserved in sleeper, AC third, seconds and first class for women and senior citizens aged 45 years and above.

  • Sleeper class: 6 to 7 low berths are reserved in each coach.

  • Third AC: 5 to 6 low berths are reserved in each coach.

  • Second AC: Each coach has 3 to 4 low berths reserved.

These seats are specifically determined for senior citizens, 45 years and women aged and pregnant women.

Why not get lower seat?

Sometimes it is seen that senior citizens do not get their favorite lower seat. The reason for this is that if you are doing reservation and all seats are already filled, then whatever seats the computer provides, the same is given to you. For this reason, many times senior citizens get the above berths.

Ways to get a favorite seat

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Railways, seats in the train are found on the first come, first served basis. This means that by making a plan of your journey in advance, you increase your chances of getting your favorite seat. Also, the process of reservation in trains starts quickly, in which the first 120 seats have reservation.
