An Indian man in the US took to Reddit to criticise his ‘Desi neighbor’ for being rude and lacking civic sense, blaming their disruptive behaviour for fueling anti-Indian remarks from others.
“I’ve lived in this building for six years and never faced such issues,” he wrote on Reddit, explaining that since the structure is wooden, residents must be mindful of noise levels while talking, walking, or running.
He added, “Recently, a couple with their son and daughter moved in downstairs, and since then, the entire building’s life has become a hellhole. They walk and stomp around their place like crazy, shaking the whole building, including other neighbours’ TVs and furniture. This starts the moment they wake up and continues until sunset.”
The man shared that his attempts to address the issue with his neighbours were unsuccessful. Even his American neighbours, frustrated by the noise, tried speaking to them but faced a language barrier, as the family lacked basic English skills. As a result, they began approaching him for help.
He recounted an incident where the situation escalated, forcing him to call the police. The neighbour’s husband confronted him aggressively in Gujarati, despite being asked to communicate in English. Meanwhile, another resident, who works night shifts, struggled to sleep due to the constant loud conversations and stomping. The disturbances became so severe that multiple neighbors also started calling the police.
The man emphasised the importance of basic civic etiquette in the US, stating that mutual understanding and mindfulness are key in a civilised society unless laws are broken.
Despite multiple polite discussions and even police involvement, he claimed the neighbors continued their disruptive behavior. He added that his wife, who understands Gujarati, can clearly hear their loud conversations about financial matters, highlighting the extent of the noise issue.
The man also accused the family of spitting gutkha and staining the building. A South Indian neighbour informed him that the new residents were spitting paan and gutkha onto their balcony, creating a foul smell and potential health hazard. Even their young daughter complained about it. He admitted witnessing the man spitting multiple times.
His American neighbors jokingly blamed him for their behavior, saying, “These are your people.” He apologised, explaining that despite his efforts, the family refused to change their ways or follow basic civic etiquette.
