Cannons: The Indian Army will soon be equipped with indigenous cannons. The government has approved contracts of Rs 7,000 crore to promote self -reliance in the country’s defense production sector. The Cabinet Committee on Security Affairs (CCS) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (20 March) approved a contract of Rs 7,000 crore for 307 local level cannons and toing vehicles.

The firepower of this cannon is about 48 kilometers.

According to sources, the ATAGS (Advanced Todd Artillery Gun System) contracts also include 327 toing trucks, paving the way to sign the contract by the end of March. This cannon of 155 mm/52 caliber is about 48 km. The purchase of new cannon will promote modernization in India and will also increase the preparations for the Indian Army. The army has included 100 such guns under a contract of $ 720 million from 2017, and many of them have been deployed in Ladakh sector after advanced to enable them to operate in the mountains. The cannon was originally purchased for desert areas.

 

What is ATAGS project?

It is noteworthy that DRDO launched the Advanced Todd Artillery Gun System Project in 2013, which aims to replace the army’s old cannons with a modern 155 mm artillery gun system. DRDO has tied up with two private companies Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems Limited for the construction of this cannon. This order will be divided between the two companies. The lowest bidding company Bharat Forge will manufacture and supply 60% of the cannons for the ATAGS tender. The remaining 40 percent of the cannon will be produced by TASL (Tata Advanced Systems Limited).
