External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that India is aware of its responsibility in multi-regional technical and economic cooperation (BIMSTEC) and is aware of economic and geopolitical activities.

India believes that regional cooperation is not based on specific issues, rather it is based on an integrated approach. He also said that India has the longest 6,500 km coastline in the Bay of Bengal. Jaishankar’s statement came after the comment by Mohammad Yunus, the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, in which he said that seven states of India’s Northeast are located all around. Therefore, Bangladesh is the only protector of the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. Muhammad Yunus made this comment during his visit to China. Jaishankar’s remarks that India’s longest coastline in the Bay of Bengal is considered to be a type of indirect satire on Muhammad Yunus. Yunus had urged China to establish an economic base in Bangladesh and said that Bangladesh is the only patron in the ocean in the region. Addressing the sixth BIMSTEC summit here, Jaishankar said that the countries around the Bay of Bengal have shared interests and shared concerns.
