India’s first vertical lift Pamban Bridge is ready and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate it on 6 April on Ram Navami. The 2.08 km long bridge on the sea connects the island of Rameswaram to the mainland of India. It is a vertical lift sea bridge along the railway track, on which trains can also run and ships can also pass from below.
This is how Pamban Bridge works
To facilitate sea traffic, a portion of the railway track on the bridge was raised 17 meters high so that the ship could pass down. The bridge is built parallel to the Pamban bridge, about 110 years old during British rule. This heritage bridge, built several decades ago, is no longer worth using due to rust. So it was closed.
Railways have constructed this bridge at a cost of about Rs 150 crore. Built at a cost of Rs 531 crore, this bridge presents a wonderful example of marine traffic and rail connectivity. Also, this bridge is an example of amazing engineering, as it is the country’s first vertical lift bridge. This means that its central part can be raised up to 17 meters, so that larger ships will be able to pass under the bridge.
Strong design and unmatched construction
It takes 5 minutes 30 seconds to open the swing of the new Pamban Bridge, while the old bridge swing takes 35 minutes to 40 minutes to open. Now the construction of a new bridge will save a lot of time. Buced with the help of high quality and technology, this bridge is designed to withstand disturbed marine conditions and strong winds.
If the wind speed exceeds 58 km per hour, the movement of trains on the track will stop. According to experts, this bridge will last for more than 100 years. This bridge is built using stainless steel, which protects it from more damage.
The bridge climbing lift girder weighs 660 metric tons and is designed for 80 km/h. The sanctioned speed of trains on this track is 75 km per hour. This means that trains passing through the bridge will be able to pass at a low speed. This bridge will increase the facilities of the devotees going to Rameshwar.
