India sent humanitarian aid, medical personnel and rescue team to Myanmar, assisting the country to cope up with the sudden and devastating earthquake. India launched ‘Operation Brahma’ on March 29 and assured support to the quake-torn nation in emergency and disaster relief.

India begins Operation Brahma

A special briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) was held on Saturday, in which Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal threw light on India’s assistance to Myanmar and announced Indian naval ships carrying relief materials were being sent to the country ports.

Meanwhile, Dr S Jainshankar, External Affairs Minister of India, informed a 118-member Indian Army Field Hospital unit was being sent to Mandalay from Agra for medical assistance in emergency and trauma cases. Jaiswal added that two C-17 aircraft with 118 member unit included Women & Child Care services and 60 tonnes of relief material.

Blankets, sleeping bags and more

“India dispatches first tranche of urgent humanitarian aid for the people of Myanmar”, Jaishankar posted on X, on Saturday, while announcing the IAF was carrying blankets, tarpaulin, hygiene kits, sleeping bags, solar lamps, food packets and kitchen set. The minister uploaded images of search & rescue team and medical team taking flight to the earthquake-hit region.

A medical team from the Indian Army’s Shatrujeet Brigade Medical Responders has reportedly been deployed at Myanmar for surgical care, along with the team of medical personnel establishing 60-bed centre in Mandalay for treating emergency and trauma cases.

PM Modi on Myanmar earthquake

PM Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences for the loss of lives while standing with the country during its difficult time, terming the role of India as a ‘Close friend and neighhbour’.

“Spoke with Senior General H.E. Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. Conveyed our deep condolences at the loss of lives in the devastating earthquake. As a close friend and neighbour, India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour. Disaster relief material, humanitarian assistance, search & rescue teams are being expeditiously dispatched to the affected areas as part of #OperationBrahma”, the prime minister posted.

Myanmar Earthquake

On Friday, Myanmar was hit by a massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake.

The tremors of the quake were felt across Thailand. The epicentre of the earthquake was reported to be close to Mandalay in Myanmar. The aftermath of the disaster was huge loss of life and property.

With more than 1,600 dead and many others injured, no Indian causalities have been reported so far.
