India Pakistan War: The International Monetary Fund on Friday sanctioned a loan of about one billion US dollars to Pakistan under the extraordinary fund facility. India opposed Pakistan and its financial assistance. No vote was also taken from India. Earlier too, India had decided to stay away from voting to give Pakistan an economic package.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif gave this information. The Prime Minister of Pakistan says that getting a loan is India’s failure. He said that IMF approved a billion dollar loan to Pakistan is a failure of India’s pressure strategy. This statement was released by the Prime Minister’s Office.
India opposed providing financial assistance to Pakistan. The IMF Board met in Washington on 9 May 2025, in which India opposed Pakistan’s request for additional assistance of Pakistan for not fulfilling the terms of IMF.
India also said that the financial assistance given to Pakistan indirectly helped its intelligence agencies and terrorist organizations like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, which attack India.

Pakistan’s dependence on IMF
Pakistan’s economy is very bad at this time. Pakistan has become largely dependent on IMF. At present, not voting for India in IMF is a clear indication for other financial institutions that it is not appropriate to provide financial assistance to Pakistan without fixing the responsibility of Pakistan. India believes that it is not just an economic issue but also a matter of regional security. Continuing financial assistance to Pakistan without any improvement can create instability in South Asia.
