News India Live, Digital Desk: India-Pakistan Tension: The tension between India and Pakistan is once again at its peak. On the night of 8 May, Pakistan tried to attack many cities in India with drones and missiles, but India’s strong defense system thwarted these attacks. In response to India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’, this was Pakistan’s action, which was done in retaliation for the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Meanwhile, there has been news that India has killed an AWACS (Airborn Warning and Control System) aircraft in Pakistan’s Punjab province. However, this news has not been officially confirmed yet. This incident has increased the curiosity to know about AWACS aircraft.
What is AWACS?
AWACS are special aircraft that have a large and rotating radar. These aircraft act like an aerial warning system and can catch hazard hazards like aircraft, missiles etc. Radars located on the ground are able to work only to a limited distance due to the rounding of the Earth’s surface, while AWACS aircraft flying at the height and recognizing the danger from a distance and warning the army in time. These aircraft also play an important role in the control and coordination of military operations.
How many AWACS do Pakistan have?
Pakistan currently has a total of nine AWACS aircraft. In 2006, Pakistan bought four Saab-20,000 aircraft from Sweden. Four ZDK-03 AWACS aircraft were purchased from China in 2008, which retired in 2024. After this, Pakistan bought three more Aria aircraft in 2017 and 2020. Now that ZDK-03 is not in the airline, if India has killed AWACS, it will probably be the Saab-20000 aircraft.
Stress may increase
Due to this alleged incident, a stressful situation between the two countries may be more serious. India’s strict attitude against terrorism and Pakistan’s retaliation is increasing the concern of the international community, as both countries are nuclear power.
