Increasing Obesity in Women: Diabetes expert counted long -term health complications, know how to protect

News India Live, Digital Desk: Increasing obesity in women: Obesity in women is a growing concern worldwide, but its patterns and contributing factor vary according to the field. In India, female obesity is affected by unique socio-cultural, economic and biological factors. Traditional diet, urbanization and low physical activity contributes to weight gain, while social expectations about body image and lifestyle make this issue more complicated. Dr. Rajiv Kovil, Head of Diabetology, Zandra Healthcare and Rang De Neela Initiative’s co-founder, spoke about the effect of obesity on women’s health.

How does obesity affect women’s health?

A major concern is the low representation of women in clinical trials on obesity. Historically, medical research has been male-centered, causing a difference in understanding how obesity in women manifests in different ways, especially in relation to hormones, pregnancy and metabolic health. Pregnancy -related weight gain, inadequate postpartum care (PNC), increases the risk of obesity. Many women in India, especially from low-come backgrounds, have a lack of access to proper nutrition and healthcare during pregnancy, which leads to prolonged weight.

Another factor is the legacy of poor maternal nutrition for generations. Studies suggest that malnourished ancestors can motivate future generations to obese through epignetic changes. It is particularly relevant in India, where the previous generations faced famine and lack of food. Together with modern dietary excesses, it creates a contradiction where malnourished mothers give birth to children suffering from obesity. To resolve these challenges, research on gender-competed obesity requires better maternal healthcare and better nutrition policies.
