Increase in electricity rates in Uttar Pradesh, fuel surcharge will cause additional burden on consumers

The electricity rates have been increased in Uttar Pradesh after about five years. Power companies have implemented an increase of 1.24 per cent under fuel surcharge, which has become effective since April 2025. This will increase the monthly electricity bills of consumers of the state, which will directly affect their monthly expenses. With this increase, power companies are expected to have an additional income of about Rs 79 crore.

Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) already owes a huge outstand of Rs 33,122 crore for consumers. In this situation, the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Consumer Council has raised questions, calling the decision to increase the rates unfair. Council President Awadhesh Verma says that companies are putting a new financial burden on the general public instead of recovering the arrears already existing.

The council has also opposed the new exemption to reduce or increase UPPCL on monthly basis. Awadhesh Verma also said that the surcharge of Rs 78.99 crore imposed in January could have been adjusted from the previous surplus of consumers, but it was not done. The council has warned that if this decision is not withdrawn, they will agitate.

At the same time, experts say that if the current conditions persist, then the electricity rates may increase by 10 to 20 percent in the coming time. Due to this, electricity rates can also be seen on the lines of petrol and diesel on a monthly basis.
