The deadline to link Aadhaar card with PAN is over. The Income Tax Department had fixed June 30, 2023 as the last date for linking Aadhaar with PAN. If you have not linked PAN card with Aadhaar then your PAN card has become useless. That is, you will have trouble in doing the important work related to it. You will have to pay more money for filing income tax return. Let’s understand how?

ITR has to be filed by 31st July

Taxpayers will have to file ITR by 31 July 2023. You will not be able to file ITR if the PAN card is inoperative. This is because there is less than a month left for the income tax deadline to end and it will take a maximum of 30 days to activate the PAN card. If a PAN card is currently inactive, it can be reactivated after paying the fine. In such a situation, until the PAN card is activated, there is a possibility of missing the deadline for filing ITR.

how much will be the fine

People whose PAN card has become inactive since July 1 due to non-linking of PAN and Aadhaar will be the biggest losers while filing ITR. Your old PAN card will not be accepted on the Income Tax Department website. To activate it again, you will have to pay Rs 1000 but the process will take 1 month, while the last date for filing tax returns is 31st July. If you default and the total income is more than Rs 5 lakh, then you will have to pay a late fee of Rs 5000. In such a situation, if you activate PAN and file the return, then you will have to pay ITR late fee of Rs 5000 and Aadhaar-PAN linking Rs 1000. That means there will be a shock of 6000 rupees. However, if your total income does not exceed Rs 5 lakh, you will have to pay a late fee of Rs 1,000 for late ITR filing. This means that instead of 6 thousand rupees.

Only then you will be allowed to link PAN with Aadhaar.

You will be able to file ITR only if you have already paid the penalty for linking PAN and Aadhaar. That is, if you have paid the fine for linking PAN and Aadhaar by June 30, then only you will be allowed to link PAN with Aadhaar. According to the tweet of the Income Tax Department, if the penalty for linking has been paid by June 30 and the PAN is not linked, then the department will consider it. If you have filed ITR before linking PAN with Aadhaar to claim any pending tax refund, you will not get income tax refund till PAN-Aadhaar is linked.
