Railways will soon start serving passengers on the country’s first vertical lift bridge i.e. New Pambon Bridge. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Pamban Bridge connecting Rameswaram Island to the Indian mainland on 6 April. In 2019, the Government of India approved the construction of technically advanced, future -oriented new Pamban Bridge. As a result, India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge is ready. It is a 2.07 km long miracle of the engineers of the country, which is spread in the Pakistani Strait in Tamil Nadu.

Evidence of engineering capacity

Pamban Bridge is a proof of India’s engineering capacity and development of visionary infrastructure. But before that, there is also the original Pamban Bridge here. The original Pamban Bridge was built in 1914 by British engineers. Cantillar is a structure that consists of a Sherger rolling lift span that connects Rameswaram Island to the Indian mainland. For more than a century, it continued to serve as an important lifeline for pilgrims, tourists and business. However, a modern solution is required for rigid maritime environment and increasing transport demand. In 2019, the Government of India approved the construction of technically advanced, future -oriented new Pamban Bridge.

Need for new Pamban Bridge

The new Pamban Bridge was constructed by Rail Development Corporation Limited. Which is a Navratna public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways. Until the beginning of the 21st century, the old bridge was not able to meet the needs of modern transport. The increasing amount of traffic and the need for acute and safe connectivity inspired the government to imagine a new infrastructure. Which is technically advanced, durable and ready for the future.

The main features of the new Pambon Bridge

The 72.5 m long navigation area can be extended to 17 meters. This can lead to large ships under it. The new bridge is 3 meters higher than the existing bridge. The use of modern materials and engineering techniques will ensure the longevity of the bridge. This bridge is made of stainless steel. This includes high-grade protective paint and completely welded joints. A special polycyloxen coating protects it from rust. It also ensures its long life even in the harsh marine environment.

The bridge was constructed at a cost of Rs 535 crore.

This sea bridge has been constructed by Rail Development Corporation Limited at a cost of Rs 535 crore. This bridge will enable Indian Railways to run trains at a greater speed. A new train of Indian Railways will run from Tambaram and Rameswaram to Pamban Bridge. Train number 16103/16104 Tambaram-Rameswaram-Tambaram Express will cover a distance of 618 km in 11.30 hours. Train number 16103 Tambaram-Rameswaram Express train will depart from Tambaram at 18:10 and reach its destination at 05:40. On the other hand, train number 16104 Rameswaram-Tambaram Express will depart at 16:00 and reach Tambaram at 03:45 pm.
