Mumbai: In a move aimed at fostering interdisciplinary learning, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai has signed a Memorandum Of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dhanbad to launch a dual degree programme.
This initiative seeks to integrate technical knowledge with managerial expertise, equipping students with a well-rounded education that meets the evolving needs of industries globally, according to IIM Mumbai Director Professor Manoj K Tiwari.
“Under this collaboration, IIT Dhanbad will select 15 of its top-performing students each year to participate in the programme. To qualify, students must maintain a CGPA of 7.5 or above and complete specific foundational courses recommended by IIM Mumbai,” Professor Tiwari informed.
These preparatory courses are designed to ease the transition from a purely technical curriculum to the managerial and strategic focus of IIM, he added.
Participants in the dual degree programme will have the flexibility to choose between two options: the first option involves spending three and a half years at IIT Dhanbad followed by one and a half years at IIM Mumbai, while the second option entails completing four years at IIT Dhanbad before moving to IIM Mumbai for a final year.
One of the most attractive features of the programme is IIM Mumbai’s responsibility for the placement of the selected students. “Their placement will be our responsibility,” said Professor Tiwari, adding that the institute will also provide internships to the students. “And our internships are well paid. Our students get even Rs 3-4 lakh per month as interns, which is unheard of,” said Professor Tiwari.
This partnership is not IIM Mumbai’s first such endeavour. A similar dual degree programme was introduced last year in collaboration with IIT Patna, which has already proven successful in bridging the gap between technical and managerial education.
The success of this initiative has sparked interest from other institutions as well, with IIT Jammu actively seeking to establish a similar collaboration with IIM Mumbai.
