Shashank Sandhu and Sameer Sinha, a delegation and council members of the Indian Golf Association (IGU), participated in the ‘Masters Tournament 2025’ held at the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club from 7 to 13 April.

 

During the week, the IGU delegation met influential individuals and senior officials of the international golf community to advocate India’s Golf Development Agenda. His visit was part of the widespread initiative by the Indian Golf Association to increase its global presence and accelerate development at the grassroots level.

The IGU delegation met Rolex CEO Arnod Laborde and informed about the organization’s efforts to strengthen junior and amateur golf in India. Labor praised the ground level approach and expressed interest in support in future.

India will have to be made world winners in the near future.

The IGU delegation made a detailed presentation before Anthony Scanlon, Executive Director of the International Golf Federation. Representatives led by IGU President Brijinder Singh presented the outline of the current status and future plans of golf in India. Scanalon called India a “sleeping veteran” in golf and referred to its immense ability to make world champions in the near future.

Supported to make sports more accessible in India

Representatives of IGU participated in the release ceremony of the book “The Unknowns’ written by Nicholas Kailave, son of Eli Kailave, the founder of Kailave Golf. Kailave provided golf equipment to underprivileged children in India, which strengthened the IGU’s junior development program and pledged to support the game to make the game more accessible.

Commenting on the visit, Sameer Sinha, a member of the Golf Association of India (IGU) Council, said, “I am proud to represent India in The Masters. The yatra was a valuable opportunity to make global relations and share India’s approach to Golf. We are excited and we are ready to take this game to the next level in India.”

He added, “The ideal infrastructure is available for golf players in Ahmedabad, with two international golf courses and an academy. We are focusing on taking golf to the ground level, with constant support from international organizations, it will definitely give good results.”

Thoughts to advance the development of sports globally

The main attraction of the visit was the invitation of a special chairman Dinner organized by Fred Ridley, president of The Masters. Sandu gave important information on the IGU initiative to promote golf in India. Representatives of IGU created a network with senior golf administrators around the world including Chile, Brazil, Belgium, Bolivia, China, Croatia, Venezuela and actively exchange ideas, insight and strategies to advance sports development globally.

It is also proposed to start courses in agricultural science and turf management.

The IGU delegation also met Asia Pacific Dominic Wall and Royal and Energy Golf Club President Niraal Farkharson, who expressed support for the development of golf in India. Sandu also proposed to introduce agricultural science and turf management courses during a discussion with Brad Barges, CEO of Sports Turf Solutions, to create local capacity in turf development and increase the sports infrastructure of India.

From 11 to 13 April, IGU representatives discussed with global stakeholders including the United States Golf Association (USGA), who expressed enthusiasm for India’s sports development and discussed the IP success of cricket. Sandhu and Sinha Masters were present at the 2025 prize distribution ceremony, the journey outlines India’s growing reputation in global golf.
