New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the petition of an NGO called Kahar Samaj Panch Samiti, which opposed the renewable energy project at the ecological territory of Maharashtra, and said that if every project is opposed, how will the country progress? The Supreme Court questioned the eligibility of the NGO to file this petition and said, “Who put you up?” Who gives you the fund? What is your previous experience in environmental protection? The bench of the Supreme Court said that it seems that the company which failed to win the tender, has provided you money and thus it is trying to stop the project by resorting to absurd legal action.

Dismissing the NGO’s petition, the Western Region of the National Green Tribunal said on 9 September last year that it could not refer to any law prohibiting such activities in ecological point of view. The Green Tribunal said that the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Ltd., is a company owned by the Ministry of Energy, Government of the National Therm Electricity Corporation-NTPC, Maharashtra. Tenders were issued to set up a floating solar project in Jaikwadi Dam. The project was being installed at a dam located in Jaikwadi village in Sambhaji Nagar district. The NGO had sought an order from the court to cancel the proposed project.

The Supreme Court did not understand any need to amend the order of the NGT. The bench said that you are not allowing a single plan to run. If there is opposition to every scheme then how will the country progress? You also have problems in solar power projects. The NGO argued that the floating solar power project would affect the aquatic life of the dam and cause permanent damage to the biodiversity of the region.
