Jaggery is a natural sweetener and is more beneficial for health than sugar. But one cannot trust the purity of jaggery available in the market, because many times it is adulterated. Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suggested some methods to identify fake jaggery. Come, let us learn how to identify adulteration in jaggery.

Ways to identify adulteration in jaggery

  1. starch

To identify if starch has been added to the jaggery, dissolve a small amount in water. If something remains at the bottom after the jaggery dissolves, then it is adulterated jaggery.

  2. adulteration of oil

To make jaggery shiny and attractive, oil is sometimes added to it. To identify it, rub jaggery between the fingers. If the jaggery feels greasy or greasy, it means that oil has been adulterated in it.

  3. adulteration of artificial colors

The color of real jaggery is generally brown. If the color of jaggery is very dark or bright, it means that artificial color has been added to it.

  4. Jaggery texture

The texture of unadulterated jaggery is neither very soft nor very hard. If jaggery is adulterated with gypsum, it may become too soft or too hard.

  5. adulteration of washing powder

Hydrochloric acid is used to detect adulteration of detergent in jaggery. If bubbles start rising when acid is added to the jaggery, it means that detergent has been adulterated in it.

By using these methods you can choose pure jaggery and keep your health safe.
