The crew of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship ‘Vigraha’ rescued two endangered Olive Ridley turtles, which were entangled in a web weighing about 600 kg left in the sea. Officials gave this information on Friday.
Olive Ridley is a species of turtle that comes in millions on the banks of Odisha between February and March every year.
The ICG posted on the social media platform ‘X’, “The Indian Coast Guard Vigra Vigraha saved two endangered Olive Ridley Turtles under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, which were trapped in a net weighing about 600 kg.” The ICG also shared a photo and video clip of the operation.
The Indian Coast Guard rescued the turtles from the trap. Such nets thrown into the sea pose a serious threat to the marine life. Turtles, dolphins and other marine organisms often get trapped in these nets, injuring or die.
