The pain of 3-1 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was still fresh when Team India suffered another setback. The International Cricket Council (ICC) released its new Test rankings on January 6, in which India dropped out of the top 2. India has now slipped to the third position, while South Africa has captured the second position after registering a win over Pakistan in the last Test.

ICC Test Rankings: Position of top 10 teams

  1. Australia – 126 rating points
  2. South Africa – 112 rating points
  3. India – 109 rating points
  4. England – 106 rating points
  5. New Zealand – 96 rating points
  6. Sri Lanka – 87 rating points
  7. Pakistan – 83 rating points
  8. west indies – 75 rating points
  9. bangladesh – 65 rating points

Reasons for India’s decline in ranking

  1. Defeat in Border-Gavaskar Trophy:

India suffered a 3-1 defeat in the series against Australia.

  2. Impact of home defeat:

Before the BGT, India had also lost 3-0 in the home series, which led to a big drop in the rankings.

  3. Performance of other teams:

South Africa achieved a big win by defeating Pakistan, which improved their rating.

Australia’s dominance continues

Australia continues to top the Test rankings with 126 rating points. The team has further strengthened its position by defeating India in BGT. With this, South Africa captured the second position and pushed India to the third position.

England and New Zealand situation

England is at fourth position with 106 rating points, while New Zealand is at fifth position with 96 rating points.

South Africa and Australia in WTC final

Australia and South Africa are also on top in the points table of ICC World Test Championship (WTC) and both the teams have reached the final.
